Bees And Technology

Annie Webb

Thermography is a great piece of technology, often used by firefighters to navigate through smoke, the military or plumbers/builders to locate pipes behind walls etc. It works by detecting radiation on the long infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, infrared radiation can be seen in anything with a temperature above zero with or without visible illumination. So wtf does that all mean?!... It's a super handy tool for beekeepers, now and again ( more often than not ) bees like to get themselves in some rather hard to get to places, from wall cavities to chimneys, or even in trees that fall down! Before this technology was used by beekeepers, a swarm in a wall would require small holes being drilled into the wall to find where the colony is before removing the bricks and then the bees, this technology allows us to very quickly and very accurately pinpoint exactly where the bees are without causing any damage and allow us to come up with a plan for removal. It's a very expensive technology to invest in but for beekeepers who collect swarms it certainly is a worthy investment, although the dog and the cat may get fed up with the initial testing/playing when it first arrives these are some thermal images of the tree and the tree bees from earlier this year, this colony was hugeeee and the camera really allowed us to see just how big the colony was
