Bombylius major - The Bee Fly

Annie Webb

Bombylius major - Dark edge Bee Fly. This is not a bee, just a bee mimic. Although the adults are great pollinators their larvae are parasitic to solitary bee colonies. The female will flick her eggs near the entrance to solitary bee nests and once hatched her larvae will feed on the larvae of the solitary bees. This is the same fly in both pictures, I just used slightly different lighting in the second shot to pick up the distinctive dark edges of the wings.
