Can Queen Bees Fly?

I see so many posts from beekeepers talking about queen honeybees, saying they do or saying they don't and then a stream of confused comments from thinking they did or didn’t fly.

Here's the crack it's both...

Queens fly for 2 purposes to mate and to swarm, queens make crap flyers because of their size and weight. A virgin queen is lite enough to make a mating flight, but once mated she is too heavy to fly, so how does she swarm? Kind of like boxers making weight before a fight, queen bees need to make weight to fly, they need to lose around 1/3 of their body weight to swarm, in preparation for her leaving the hive the bees that feed the queen will start restricting her food intake so she can drop weight. If she's not swarming and shes not mating she's not flying, she will be in the hive laying eggs like an absolute machine, whilst being tended to by her little team of attendants that groom and feed her.
