Skep's, Bee shelters & Bee Boles. 2/3 Post's

Annie Webb

Some of you may have heard of Hartpury bee shelter, this listed building can be found in the grounds of Hartpury church. Many years ago recesses were built into cottage walls and were used to protect skeps. There are few reports of freestanding purpose-built bee shelters, this one in Hartpury being the biggest and most decorative. Built-in Cotswold stone by a Gloucestershire stonemason, it can hold up to 28 skeps. There are a few theories as to how it came to be, check out the Hartpury heritage website to read more about the history of this awesome piece. https://www.hartpuryheritage.org.uk/heritage/bee-shelter/history/

This Bottom photo was taken from the Hartpury heritage website, the other photos are mine.
