Syrphidae - Hoverfly. Batesian Mimicry

Annie Webb

Syrphidae (Hoverfly) - Hoverflies are true flies and do not sting, they are a great example of Batesian mimicry, generally mimicking bees and wasps to avoid predators. There are over 250 species of Hoverfly in the UK, they are not commonly recorded though so there is thought to be a lot more, in one form or another they can be found in all gardens across the UK. The adults are great pollinators and their larvae have a huge appetite for those pesky aphids, so they make another great natural pest controller for your garden.
