The larvae and pupa stages of the ladybird life cycle

Annie Webb

There are 4 stages to the ladybird life cycle eggs, larvae, pupa and adult. The black one at the bottom is the larvae, they spend 20-30 days at this stage. The two red ones above are the pupa, this stage can last anywhere between 3 to 12 days depending on the type of ladybird, the environment and temperatures. Don't forget ladybirds make great natural pest control for the aphids in your garden and they also do some pollination along the way. Although I small amount of precaution should be taken, there are hundreds of ladybird species and not all are the same, it has been known for pets to eat ladybirds and it can cause severe reactions. They are only harmful to humans if you are allergic to them, they can bite but carry no human diseases, like most of nature it's best to admire with our eyes, not our hands.
