What Do Beekeepers Do During Winter?

Annie Webb

There are many jobs for beekeepers to do through the winter, some of those being feeding the bees, bee treatments and deep cleaning equipment. Bees are susceptible to many pests and diseases, so cleaning all equipment from hives to tools is essential, we also have to build hives and frames for the coming season. The beekeeping season can take some planning and preparation, we will have things ready to go as soon as the weather is ready for the bees to go. We also take some time to make products with any byproducts from the hive that we have collected over the year, I also get out to groups and clubs to do talks on honeybees and pollinators. Often the sales from these products and talks support the running of beekeepers apiaries and swarm collecting, we also like to focus on helping other pollinators and reinsating wild habbitat.

The First picture is of a blow torch cleaning a smoker, the picture below that is a hive with a steamer attached, this is to help get out all the remaining wax. The other 2 pictures are of hive and frame construction.
