Why Take The Wax Away From bees?

Annie Webb

So wax posts often cause messages to pop up, the biggest question being why take the wax if it takes the bees so long to make?

When the bees build their honeycomb and they start laying brood, over time this comb becomes discoloured and dirty and in just a few years can end up looking almost black. As the bees keep reworking the same bits of comb over and over, the cells become smaller meaning bees cant fully form in the developmental stages, between that and the build-up of dirt it puts the bees at a much higher risk of pests and diseases, meaning it will affect future generations of bees to come. As beekeepers it is our responsibility to save these creatures and protect them, it would be pretty irresponsible of us to leave them so susceptible, so every 2-5 years the wax gets switched out. It is at this point that we begin filtering our wax, yes it's taken the bees an awfully long time to create that wax but how damn disrespectful of me would it be if I was to just throw it in the bin after all their hard work? This is why we spend hours filtering wax and making beeswax products, it's our way of celebrating and appreciating the hard work of our bees whilst keeping them safe and disease free.

Below are some examples of varying wax colours from our hives, from very fresh, to a couple of seasons old at the top this post.
